REFURBISHMENT

THE CLOCK SPIRE RESTAURANT

THE CLOCKSPIRE RESTAURANT, SHERBORNE

We were engaged by our clients to transform the Grade II Listed Medlycott Centre in Somerset, built in 1864 by Sir William Medlycott as a school house and tasked with the prestigious contract to transform the semi derelict building into a beautiful new restaurant with the ability to serve 70 customers with five-star luxury cuisine in fitting surroundings.

The ten-month programme commenced with the dilapidated roof being stripped, structural repairs undertaken and then reconstructed utilising existing and salvaged roof tiles to match.

The external walls underwent stonework repairs and repointing as necessary, retaining as much of the original fabric as possible and replacing lost stonework with materials in keeping with the original.  All windows and doors were overhauled and the majestic clock tower restored to its former glory as appropriate for such a prominent landmark within the Somerset landscape.

Once the exterior of the building was complete work to the interior began.  We reinstated the original historical floor plan and proportions of the central and west hall, retaining and refurbishing all original features to preserve them within the new scheme.

Alterations were then undertaken to the East Hall which would accommodate the new chef’s kitchen and modern catering facilities were installed to enable the staff to undertake their role effectively and meet the needs of a busy restaurant.

A new mezzanine level was created for diners to enjoy drinks and this was designed high up in the roof space to enable the structure to be admired with its original timber beams left exposed.

New mechanical, electrical and lighting installations were carried out and the building was redecorated throughout utilising quality finishes.  The project was concluded to an extremely high standard of workmanship demonstrating our unique skills and ability to deliver such a remarkable project which subsequently won the 2020 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards and has become a very popular dining experience.
