SOMERSET LIFE MUSEUM

RESTORATION AND REFURBISHMENT OF THE RURAL LIFE MUSEUM, SOMERSET

We were commissioned by The South West Heritage Trust to undertake the redevelopment of the Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury which entailed four separate buildings, three of which are Listed including a 14th Century barn which once belonged to Glastonbury Abbey.  Our brief was to create new galleries within the existing traditional Somerset farm buildings as well as creating a new learning centre, upgrading existing visitor facilities and providing disabled access, all without changing the integral fabric and feel of the historic Museum.

Our dedicated management and site team utilised their wealth of knowledge and experience within the field of restoration to form the new circulation routes and exhibit areas integrated into the pattern of the old buildings. The internal spaces were reorganised and the main entrance was re-established.  The old courtyard was opened up and visitor access and flow improved to all levels.  Our skilled craftsman undertook the site works with diligence, expertise and outstanding precision and our clients were delighted by the level of dedication given to this project.  The Museum has gone from strength to strength since completion of the works and the project won a Somerset LABC Award for Outstanding Design and Workmanship.
