Restoration & Conservation Wells Cathedral, Camery Development
PROJECT REPORT
WELLS CATHEDRAL, CAMERY DEVELOPMENT
2006-2007

Client: Wells Cathedral
Architect:
Purcell, Miller & Tritton
Quantity Surveyor: Bare, Leaning & Bare
Main Contractor: Ken Biggs Contractors Ltd

Requirements

Our brief was to construct new choir practice facilities, a music library, education and robing rooms and adjoining new public toilets all in traditional materials, linking to the East Cloister within the grounds of the Cathedral.

Construction

The contract commenced with clearance of the existing public toilets and Cathedral works storage area.  Time was taken during this process for recordings to be taken of any archaeological findings as necessary at such an historic site.

Construction of the new facilities commenced by forming an oak framed portal arch core inside load bearing walls of natural stone and lime render.

Roofing works then began, using indigenous slates and leadwork.  Natural stone copings and detail banding were installed incorporating an oak framed Pentice link to the East Cloister range.

Internal works incorporated the installation of oak flooring and wall panelling, oak cupboards, doors and skirting with natural stone flooring fitted to the link and passage.

An energy efficient under floor heating system was installed along with hot and cold water and full electrical installations were carried out.

In the choir practice room an acoustically sympathetic ceiling was constructed along with wall linings to add an element of soundproofing to this space.

Decorations and final finishes were then installed to complete this project to a high standard and to the requirements of our client.

Value £1,806,000
