Requirements
The Freshford and Limpley Stoke Community Association identified a need for a community shop in the village as it has not had one for a number of years. Planning Permission was obtained and the Association sent out tenders on a design and build basis requesting a green construction method which would be super insulated and not need any heating. Construction Ken Biggs Contractors won the contract based on a super insulated timber framed building with large glass rooflights for heat gain with opening vents for passive ventilation. |
Works commenced with the formation of foundations to support the walls which consisted of a timber frame with 200 mm of Celotex insulation with associated vapour barriers. The walls were finished externally with a lightweight self coloured render on a metal lath system. The roof was constructed using a super insulated timber structure with large Glulam beams which were left exposed as a feature of the building. The roof was finished using natural clay roof tiles. Purpose made timber windows and doors were used to complete the buildings structure. Internally an electrical installation was carried out and all walls were plaster boarded and a skim coat of plaster added. Decorations were carried out to our client’s requirements and floor finishes added using a marmoleum covering. The construction process was completed within 15 weeks and the shop opened for trading in August 2009. Value: £237,000 |
