Requirements
Our client required alterations to be carried out to extend an old Rectory House set in a quiet village location on the outskirts of Bath. The extension was to have a downstairs study with a secret stairway leading to a grand single room with a two storey high vaulted ceiling. Our brief was to visit site to carry out an extensive survey in conjunction with the Architect’s drawings to ensure all joinery details were incorporated in the eventual design and then construction of the joinery when required during the main contract. Construction
Downstairs in the study library bookcases and cupboards were constructed from Medium Density Fibreboard and Tulipwood. The units were fitted to link between wall panels and traditional box sash windows and doors. The shutters were designed to match the panel detailing so there was a seamless blend across all door and window openings which were then framed with purpose made architraves. |
An oak cut string staircase takes you upstairs through a secret doorway into an impressive main library room to which the bookcases were constructed to match those in the study, only on a much larger scale to accommodate the ceiling height. Pullout shelves were fitted behind a continuous dado rail which doubles as a finger pull to allow for a retractable desk space for reading. The panelling carries the theme around the room integrating all the bookcases, doors, windows and shutters, on top of which sits a large ornamental plaster cornice.
A raised and fielded door was created to link the library to the existing building constructed using American Black Walnut hung within a panelled lining, surrounded by ornate architraves with a large ornamental pediment above.
