Requirements
Babington House, a private members club and hotel, were looking to replace their existing spa and treatment room facilities with a new building in the working walled garden of the Grade II listed hotel complex. The aim of the project was to bring the garden into the working part of the hotel and to give the spa and treatment rooms a unique location and outlook. |
Construction The new building was constructed either side of one of the four external walls of the existing walled garden to a design to give a potting shed feel. Construction was to take place whist still giving hotel guests continued access to the working garden so an emphasis had to be placed on site safety at all times. Large 750 diameter culvert pipes were laid throughout the existing garden to prevent any flood risks to the new construction before the major contract work commenced. Substantial underpinning and reinforced concrete foundations and retaining walls were built to enable part of the new building and terraces to be sunken below garden level. Superstructures were constructed using salvaged antique bricks and reclaimed rubblestone. The roof was constructed in a traditional manner and clad in Cedar shingles. Internal finishes were then carried out to our Client’s own Interior Designer’s specifications to maintain the potting shed feel, again using many reclaimed and salvaged materials.
